Welcome
Welcome to the site, and many thanks for expressing an interest in the Durham University Light Opera Group (DULOG). DULOG aims to "produce professional quality musical theatre and light opera within Durham University and allow as many people as possible to participate in order to provide experience and nurture talent" and is an impressive society, having been in existence for over 50 years with evidence of a similar society being founded around the turn of the last century. The society originally produced only light opera (hence the name) but as this art form and musical theatre progressed, DULOG moved towards producing a range of musicals and in recent years has turned itself to varied productions from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic Oklahoma! to the modern Broadway hit RENT, as well as entertaining at University events, the most recent being the leaving dinner of former Chancellor, Bill Bryson OBE.
DULOG provides an opportunity for students to become involved in all aspects of musical theatre from acting, singing and dancing through to stage direction, production, musical direction and choreography. We stage four productions each year which enables as many students as possible to get involved. It is the executive committee that appoints the production teams who, along with the executive, are responsible for each of these shows. Every year three productions are staged in the local Assembly Rooms theatre where most student theatre is performed and we also stage an annual performance at the 500-seat Gala Theatre, which has the potential to reach over 3,000 people.
The exceptional standard of professionalism achieved by DULOG is outstanding and the talent within the university itself is phenomenal. Former DULOG members have gone on to forge professional careers in musical theatre and opera both on- and off-stage, whilst others have used the skills honed in their roles within productions to land high-profile and successful jobs outside the entertainment industry entirely. I therefore urge you to explore the site further and see what DULOG can offer you, whether you are a prospective student, sponsor or audience member.
Hannah Howie, DULOG President 2012-2013
